Gunghap: Korean Compatibility, Explained
Gunghap (궁합) is the Korean practice of reading two birth charts against each other. It is best known as the compatibility check couples get before marrying — and that families sometimes ask for — but it is used well beyond marriage: business partners, and increasingly friends doing it for fun. It compares how two charts interact, not whether two people are a good or bad match on a scale.

What it actually compares
Two charts, eight characters each. The reading looks at how the elements in one chart meet the elements in the other — where one supplies something the other is short of, where the two press on the same sore spot, and where they simply run at different speeds.
A good reading does not produce a percentage. It produces a description of the friction: this is the argument you will keep having, this is the thing that will quietly hold you together, this is the difference you should stop trying to fix.
Why families got involved
Historically, marriage in Korea joined households rather than individuals, and gunghap was part of the negotiation — a shared, external frame for a decision with a lot riding on it. That is where its reputation for seriousness comes from.
That role has faded a great deal. Most couples who get one today do it themselves, out of curiosity or as something to do together, and treat the result as a conversation starter rather than a verdict. Some parents still ask; how much weight it carries varies enormously by family.
What it cannot tell you
It cannot tell you whether to stay. Two charts that read as difficult describe a relationship that takes more deliberate work, not one that is doomed, and plenty of long marriages sit on exactly that shape.
It also cannot substitute for information you already have. If a reading says one thing and six months of living together says another, the six months is better data. The chart is a frame for what you observe, not a replacement for observing.

Is gunghap the same as astrological synastry?
They do the same job — comparing two charts — from different systems. Synastry compares planetary placements; gunghap compares the eight characters of two Korean birth charts and the way their elements interact.
Do Korean families still require gunghap before marriage?
Requiring it is now uncommon, but asking still happens, and it varies a lot between families. Most couples who get one today do it for themselves rather than for anyone else.
Can gunghap say a couple should not be together?
A responsible reading does not. It describes where two charts create friction and where they support each other. What to do with that is a decision the people involved make with far more information than the chart has.
